Is There a Perfect Blog Post Length?

When it comes to blogging, a lot of people head over to Google in search of the ideal blog post length. However, the ideal blog post length doesn’t exist. Other people who are new to blogging choose to find out the perfect equation for posting frequency, only to find themselves faced with contradicting information. There’s no set equation for how long a blog post should be and how often you should be posting. This is simply because the success of a piece of content depends on a lot of different factors, and what works for one blog post may not work for another.


What’s The Perfect Blog Post Length?

Though there’s a lot of information online with data and statistics detailing exactly how long a blog post should be and a specific upload schedule, more often than not this isn’t accurate information. When looking at this information, consider whether the information applies to a specific set of keywords or a specific type of blog post? Does the information relate to the type of keywords you’re targeting? The chances are, the information you are looking at is very specific and doesn’t consider the averages you are working to. After all, you could be writing a 500 word blog post with 4 main keywords but looking at data relating to a 10,000 word blog post with 40 main keywords. So, if there isn’t a perfect blog post length and there’s no set recipe for keyword success, what should you be looking at?


Does a Perfect Blog Post Exist?

When you’re writing a blog post, you need to consider a lot of different things; failing to do so will see your blog post struggle to be found online and it’s unlikely to achieve success. Instead of focusing on how long your blog post ‘should’ be and how many keywords it ‘should’ have, try:


  • Looking at your keywords and your search results to determine what is, and what isn’t working. Using this information, you’ll have a better idea of what keywords your blog post should be targeting and the keywords that are most likely to attract traffic.
  • Using a little bit of innovation. Instead of copying what the top search results are doing, try something new and unique. This is a good way to attract an audience that’s looking for something different.
  • Matching the length of your content to the searcher you are appealing to. For example, if a very specific problem can be solved with a short blog post, don’t use thousands of words of content.


Once you have mastered writing blog posts that tick all of the boxes (or you have found the right digital marketing agency to do that for you), it’s time to consider how often you should be publishing. There’s a lot of information online stating that you should post X times a month, so people tend to follow suit. However, this doesn’t also work best for everyone. For example:


  • Is the data referring to a website like yours or is it aimed at an entirely different sector?
  • Is the content of a high quality and is it providing readers with the information they need?
  • Is the traffic valuable and is it filled with the intended audience?


There’s an overall rule that the more you publish blogs, the more traffic you will receive and this is correct to an extent. Though, this doesn’t mean you should post substandard blog posts as often as possible. In fact, it’s a lot more beneficial to stick to a consistent schedule. For example, if you are hoping to build up subscribers it’s useful to provide frequent content on a strict schedule so that people know what to expect and when; this is true whether you are planning to upload every day at 11am or on the last Friday of every month. It’s also much more beneficial to focus on creating high quality content that gains attention, leads and conversions rather than simply aiming for as much traffic as possible.


All in all, when you’re first starting out in blogging it’s important to post regularly as a way to get a feel for what you’re doing and to improve. Though, over time, quality outweighs quantity and the perfect blog length doesn’t exist.
